Raphaël Pichon

French countertenor, choral and orchestral conductor Raphaēl Pichon was born in Paris on October 17, 1984. As a child, he was a member of the Maîtrise des Petits chaneurs de Versailes. Pichon studied the violin and the piano at the Versailles Conservatory. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris to study singing and conducting. As a countertenor, he was directed by Ton Koopman, Jordi Savall, Gustav Leonhardt, Laurence Equilbey, Paul Agnew, Bruno Boterf, and others. During studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, he formed the ensemble Pygmalion, who specialized a baroque repertoire played on period instruments. Their releases were praised by critics. Releases by Pichon and Pygmalion include the 2008 release Missae Breves BWV 234 & 235 (2008), which was awarded a Diapson d'or and an Editor’s Choice from the British magazine Gramophone. In September 2012, their third album, Missa, a recording of the first version of the Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach was given an award from the Télérama magazine. Other releases by Pichon and Pygmalion include Köthener Trauermusik (2014), Castor & Pollux (1754) (2015), Rheinmädchen (2016), Enfers (2018), and Liberta (Mozart at the Opera) (2019). In 2020, he released the critically-acclaimed album Bach: Motets.
