Roy Head

The late rock ‘n’ roll firebrand Roy Head (born in Three Rivers, Texas on January 9, 1941) was best known for his 1965 blue-eyed soul stomper “Treat Her Right”, recorded by Head and his band The Traits and peaking at Number 2 on the US Billboard pop and R&B charts. Head moved to San Marcos in 1955 and – along with San Marcos native Tommy Bolton – formed The Traits in 1957. 1965 also saw the release of Roy Head and the Traits' "Just a Little Bit" and "Apple Of My Eye", which both made it onto the Top 40. A versatile musician, in the 1970s Head ventured into the world of country music, releasing notable 1976 album Head First and scoring three Top 20 hits; "The Most Wanted Woman in Town", (1975) "Come To Me" and "Now You See Em, Now You Don't" both released in 1977. By 1995, “Treat Her Right” had been reimagined by 20 known recording artists, including Jimmy Page, Bruce Springsteen and Jerry Lee Lewis, with live cover versions from Bob Dylan, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tom Jones. The 1995 compilation Treat Her Right: The Best of Roy Head collects his rock & roll and R&B classics of the '60s. In 2019, “Treat Her Right” was given a new lease of life when it was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The rhythm ‘n’ blues crooner died in his native Texas at the age of 79 on September 21, 2020.
