Slank

Slank is one of the most iconic rock bands in Indonesian history, having won multiple Indonesian Music Awards throughout a multi-decade career. Formed in Jakarta in 1983, the band's original lineup featured teenaged musicians Bimbim, Denny BDN, Bongky, Erwan, and Kiki. The roster had already changed considerably by the time Slank released its debut album, Suit-Suit... He-He (Gadis Sexy), in 1990. Featuring a blues- and rock-influenced sound that stood in contrast to the modern musician trends of the Indonesian mainstream, Suit-Suit... He-He (Gadis Sexy) became a national hit, as did the singles "Memang" and "Maafkan." 1991's Kampungan was similarly successful, spawning the hit songs "Mawar Merah" and "Terlalu Manis (Suka2)." Following 1993's Piss, Blank experienced multi-platinum success for the first time with 1994's Generasi Biru, a chart-topping album that featured national hits like "Generasi Biroe" and "Kamu Harus Pulang." Although the group's lineup shifted radically during the late-1990s, turning Bimbim into the last co-founding member to remain in the band, Slank continued to release hit albums at a rapid pace. 1997's Tujuh, 1998's Mata Hati Reformasi, 2003's Satu Satu, and 2009's soundtrack to the hit film Generasi Biru were all named "Best Rock Album" at the Indonesian Music Awards, and the band maintained its popularity well into the 21st century with records like 2017's Palalopeyank and 2021's Vaksin.
