Review

This curious little collection features a dozen tracks of mostly early rock & roll and if there is a binding theme here, it would appear to be to include songs by late-'50s and early-'60s artists who at the time worked outside of the socially accepted box. That's all well and fine, but unfortunately most of the cuts here are live or inferior recordings, and only Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," the Champs' "Tequila," and Marilyn Monroe's shaky timepiece "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" appear to be original studio recordings, although even these may well be re-recordings in the final analysis. The sound varies throughout here, and in many cases it is just downright poor, leaving Rock & Roll Rebellion: Rebels Without a Cause as more of an extremely intriguing premise than an album actually worth seeking out when all is sung and done. ~ Steve Leggett
