Alleycats

Malaysian soft rock moguls Alleycats formed in Penang in 1969 and built up a local following before picking up steam nationally during the late 1970s. The band – originally co-founded by brothers David Arumugam (vocals) and Loganathan Arumugam (vocals) along with a group of Penang-based musicians including bassist Frank Ong, drummer Tan Chin Hock and saxophonist Chester Anthony Passerella – began amassing TV appearances and live performances, including a residency at Mocambo Club on Hong Kong Island in 1976. After honing their craft in Hong Kong, they left for Singapore and flew onto the Polygram radar, signing a recording contract in 1978. Alleycats' debut album came the following year, Terima Kasih ("Thank You"), which featured the singles "Senandung Semalam", "Terima Kasih" and "Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi". Over the next three decades, Alleycats flew the flag for groovy synthesizer and rock balladry with a prolific discography that includes the 2006 album Rasa. That album was the last one to feature Loganathan Sana, who died on June 4, 2007 following an eight-month battle with lung cancer. On December 27, 2019 former bass player Frank Ong died of lung cancer aged 54.
