Debauchery

Formed in Stuttgart, Germany in 2000, Debauchery is a death metal group founded by vocalist and guitarist Thomas Gurrath. While the group’s line-up has changed throughout the years, Thomas Gurrath has remained at the helm for over two decades. In a unique twist, the guitarist and singer also fronts two other bands that offer different musical approaches to the heavy metal genre: Blood God (hard rock/heavy metal) and Balgeroth (German metal). All three bands are promoted – by Gurrath – as the ‘trinity of blood gods.’ Originally known as Maggotcunt, the group became Debauchery in 2002, a year before the release of their debut album, Kill Maim Burn (2003). Like Gwar and several other extreme metal bands, the members of Debauchery dress in horror-themed costumes that invoke evil and violence. The group continued to release a series of albums that built upon their own myth: Rage of the Bloodbeast (2004), Torture Pit (2005), Back in Blood (2007), Continue to Kill (2008), and Rockers & War (2009). In 2010, it was discovered that Thomas Gurrath’s day job was as a high school philosophy teacher, which caused a stir in Stuttgart. When told that he’d have to choose between his teaching job and music, he chose Debauchery. His first release after this decision was the album Germany’s Next Death Metal (2011). Thomas Gurrath also began releasing albums by a side project called Blood God in 2012. Debauchery’s catalog began to grow as he issued albums such as Kings of Carnage (2013), F*ck Humanity (2015), Thunderbeast (2016) and more. In 2018, while still releasing albums with Debauchery and Blood God, Gurrath introduced Balgeroth, yet another musical side project that would co-exist with his other two bands. In 2022, Debauchery and Blood God released the album Demons of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a two-disc set that features 10 songs performed by Debauchery on one disc and the same 10 songs performed by Blood God on the other.
