French jazz singer Elisabeth Kontomanou has been on the international scene since the 1980s, when her group Conversation won the La Défense Jazz Festival competition. Born in Lyon, France, on November 30, 1961, Kontomanou moved to New York City in the ‘90s and embarked on a solo career, which kicked off with her self-titled debut album in 1993. The albums Embrace and Midnight Sun followed, and she was awarded Vocal Artist of the Year in 2006 at the Victoires du Jazz ceremony. This led to an invitation to appear at the Montreal Jazz Festival in that same year, and she made a return performance in 2014 on the momentum of her album Amoureuse. In 2008, she showed off her powerhouse voice alongside orchestral accompaniment on Siren Song: Live at Arsenal, which found her interpreting the works of Duke Ellington and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins alongside material from her then-recent album, Back to My Groove.
