Emanative

Emanative is the project of drummer Nick Woodmansey. Originally an outlet for Woodmansey's beat-driven electronic sounds, over time it morphed into a collaborative jazz project providing an outlet for a host of different musicians. The son of Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey, the drummer of David Bowie's Spiders from Mars, Nick learned the basics from his dad at an early age. He planned to go to art school in the early 1990s but changed course after a move to London saw him embedded in the city's music scene. The next decade and a half saw him involved in various drumming gigs, including a stint on a cruise ship and various London-based projects, before he decided to go it alone forming Emanative in 2006. Over Emanative's various releases the project's sound has taken on aspects of multicultural jazz, taking influence from various subgenres such as spiritual jazz, soul jazz, cosmic jazz and Indo jazz. The 2018 album 'Earth' included input from 21 musicians including Idris Ackamoor of The Pyramids, Dele Sosimi (formerly of Fela Kuti's Africa 80), Nat Birchall, Sarathy Korwar, Ibibio Sound Machine's Ben Hadwen, Benjamin Page of RocketNumberNine, Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics and Emmanuel Mario from Astrobal.
