Emmet Cohen

One of the most celebrated jazz pianists of the 2010s and 2020s, Emmet Cohen was born in Miami, Florida on May 25, 1990. Beginning at the age of three, he began to learn the piano using the Suzuki method, a music curriculum and teaching philosophy created by Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki. While attending high school in Montclair, New Jersey, he was a member of The Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble. After earning a Bachelor of Music from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in 2012, he received a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music two years later. Winner of the third prize at the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2011 and winner of many other competitions, he released his debut album, In the Element, in 2011 while still attending the Frost School of Music. His next album, Infinity (2013), was followed by Questioned Answer (2014). Emmet Cohen became an in-demand pianist and performed at clubs, venues, and festivals in the US and internationally includes iconic venues like the Village Vanguard, Ronnie Scott’s (London, England), the Cotton Club (Tokyo, Japan), the Jazzhaus Montmartre (Copenhagen, Denmark), and many others. In 2016, Emmet Cohen began producing several albums under Master Legacy series, which featured established jazz icons such as Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, and others. Emmet Cohen began hosting his own internet show, Live from Emmet’s, which featured him performing alongside many of his jazz contemporaries including Christian McBride, Houston Person, Victor Lewis, and many others. He also performed as a sideman for artists such as Herlin Riley, Veronica Swift, The Four Freshmen, Benny Bernack III, and others. Signing with the label Mack Avenue, Emmet Cohen released the albums Future Stride (2021) and Uptown in Orbit (2022).
