Erland Cooper

Born Gawain Erland Cooper in Orkney, Scotland on October 5, 1984, singer, musician, and songwriter Erland Cooper is best known for his work with the bands Erland & The Carnival and The Magnetic North as well as an acclaimed solo career. He first came to prominence in 2009 after joining forces with former Verve member Simon Tong in the progressive folk band Erland & The Carnival. The group released three full length albums – Erland & The Carnival (2010), Nightingale (2011), and Closing Time (2014) – as well as two EPs. During that group’s existence, Erland Cooper and Tong formed another group - the shoegaze / post-rock influenced The Magnetic North - with singer, songwriter, and arranger Hannah Peel. Initially a side project, the group’s debut album, Orkney: Symphony of The Magnetic North (2012) was so successful that they released a second album, Prospect of Skelmersdale, in 2016. Interested in combining orchestration with electronics, magnetic tape manipulation, and field recordings that captured the essence of nature, Erland Cooper began a solo career that combined all of those elements into a series of albums that explored ambient music. He released his solo debut album, Solan Goose, in 2018 and followed that the same year with the companion album Murmuration with William Doyle. 2019’s Sule Skerry also came with a companion album, Seachange, recorded with Leo Abrahams. Hether Blether and companion album Landform (with Marta Salogni) were released in 2020. Erland Cooper took a slightly different musical approach and did not release companion albums for The Island 1961 (2021), Music for Growing Flowers (2022), and Folded Landscapes. However, he did release several EPs during this period including Never Pass Into Nothingness and Egilsay, both released in 2021.
