Hamilton de Holanda

Award-winning bandolinist, songwriter, and arranger Hamilton de Holanda was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on March 30, 1976. Known for his mix of choro, jazz and samba, de Holanda is acknowledged as one of finest bandolim – a Brazilian mandolin - players in the world. At the age of 5, he began playing a traditional 8-string bandolim, performing in public for the first time a year later. During the course of his career, he re-invented the bandolim by adding two strings. He founded the band Dois de Ouro with his brother Fernando César and released three albums between 1997 and 1999. Beginning in 2000, he released a series of solo albums as well as collaborations with Marco Pereira, Brasilia Brasil, Mike Marshall, André Mehmari, and Joel Nascimento. De Holanda began to make a name for himself in international circles, introducing the world to his talents and his custom made bandolim. His 2015 collaboration with Diogo Nogueira, Bossa Negra, was nominated for Best Samba/Pagode Album at the 16th Latin Grammy Awards. De Holanda’s 2016 album Samba de Chico won the award for Best Instrumental Album at the Latin Grammy Awards (as well as being nominated for Best Engineered Album). In 2019, he released the album Harmonize, which was a critical success and was considered one of the 25 best Brazilian albums of the first half of that year. Over the course of his career, de Holanda has recorded or played with many artists including Hamilton has shared the stage, or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, The Dave Mathews Band, Paulinho da Costa, Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Joshua Redman, Gilberto Gil, Richard Galliano, John Paul Jones, Béla Fleck, Stefano Bollani, and others
