JJ Wilde

With her chart-topping debut record, Ruthless, Canadian rock musician JJ Wilde won the Juno Award for "Rock Album of the Year" in 2021, making her the first female artist to win the award in a quarter century. Born in 1992 in Kitchener, Ontario, she began creating music as a teenager, developing a hard-hitting style that blended the attitude-driven aggression of modern rock with unapologetically personal lyrics. Her debut EP, Wilde Eyes, Steady Hands, was released in 2019 and featured "The Rush," an anthemic single that began climbing the Canadian charts. By May 2020, the song had reached Number 1 on all three of Canada's rock charts — Alternative, Active, and Big Rock Picture — with Wilde becoming the first female to ever accomplish the feat. "The Rush" also appeared on her debut album, Ruthless, which was released to critical acclaim and commercial success in 2020. The following summer, Ruthless won the Juno Award for "Rock Album of the Year," beating nominated releases from Sam Roberts Band and Neil Young in the process. A second EP, Wilde, was also released in 2021. Wilde notably featured a punchy, percussive cover of the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks duet, which JJ Wilde recorded with Brett Emmons of The Glorious Sons.
