Larry Taylor

Larry Taylor was born in New York; his early life saw him moving between East Tennessee, California and New York. He was the bass player and occasional guitarist with a host of musicians, coming to prominence with Canned Heat who he played with initially between between 1967 and 1970. During this period he played with the band at music festivals including the Monterey International Pop Festival and Woodstock. Before this, however, he toured with Jerry Lee Lewis and played with blues and jazz musicians Albert King, Solomon Burke, Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite. Taylor was a widely respected and much called-upon session musician, playing on many of the The Monkees' records from their debut in 1966. He continued to play and record throughout the 1960s and '70s. In the '80s he worked with artists as diverse as Tom Waits, Keith Levene and The Blasters. He was still making music, despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2007, all the way up until 2017. He even recorded and toured with his old bandmates in Canned Heat on the their 50th anniversary tour in 2015. Larry Taylor died on 19th August 2019 at the age of 77 at his home in Lake Balboa, California after a 12-year battle with cancer.
