Oceansize

The British post-rock band Oceansize formed in Manchester, England, in 1998. Vocalist Mike Vennart, guitarist Steve Durose, guitarist/keyboardist Richard "Gambler" Ingram, drummer Mark Heron, and bassist Jon Ellis met while studying music in college, ultimately deciding to form a band after attending an inspirational Mogwai concert. After releasing the EPs Amputee (1999) and A Very Still Movement (2001), the band signed with Beggars Banquet Records. Their debut album Effloresce was released in 2003, followed by Everyone into Position in 2005. The latter album reached Number 75 on the German charts. It also marked Oceansize's final release for Beggars Banquet, as well as the band's last album to feature original bassist Jon Ellis. Steve Hodson soon joined the band in Ellis' place, and Oceansize partnered with Superball Music for the release of the group's third album, Frames, in October 2007. The band received widespread critical acclaim for its fourth release, Self Preserved While the Bodies Float Up, which appeared in 2010 and featured the group's strongest songwriting to date. The band unexpectedly broke up in 2011, with several members going on to perform with simpatico bands like Biffy Clyro and Amplifier. Vennart and Gambler formed the alt-rock duo British Theatre in 2012, releasing two EPs and one full-length album during the 2010s. Vennart also launched a solo career, making his debut with The Demon Joke in 2015 and following its release with To Cure a Blizzard Upon a Plastic Sea (2018) and In the Dead, Dead Wood (2020).
