Pastor Lopez

With a recording legacy which spans five decades and more than 40 albums Pastor López's contribution and influence on Venezuelan popular music cannot be overestimated. He was born in Barquisimento, the state capital of Lara in 1944 and began his performing career with his brothers playing Joropo, a popular form of traditional Venezuelan music. However, his career didn't begin to take off until he teamed up with fellow local musician Nelson Henríquez and this association provided the springboard from which to launch his own solo ambitions. López began to concentrate his efforts on creating music in the Cumbian style, a form which combines music and dance and which is popular throughout Latin America. One of his outstanding achievements was his ability to build audiences outside his native Venezuela and López's fan base extended throughout Colombia, North America and Spain and reached as far as the UK. His most recent album was 'Vuelve Con Mucho Más' which he released in 2007. In 2019 at the age of 74, López was admitted to hospital and shortly afterwards suffered a stroke from which he didn't recover.
