Reinbert de Leeuw

Reinbert De Leeuw was a renowned Dutch conductor and composer. He built a reputation on being a champion of music by Charles Ives, forming the Dutch Charles Ives Society in 1969. He later turned his attention to the work of Arnold Schoenberg, forming the Schoenberg Ensemble to perform works by Schoenberg and that of other contemporary composers. De Leeuw could regularly be seen at the podium of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of The Netherlands as well as Sinfonietta Amsterdam and Netherlands Wind Ensemble. He was readily involved in the musical landscape of other European countries as well as lending his baton skills to American orchestras. From 1994-98 he also served as artistic director for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Australia. As well as Ives and Schoenberg, De Leeuw also championed the works of Olivier Messiaen, Gyorgy Ligeti and Louis Andriessen, regularly conducting their works. He also performed himself on the piano works by Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok and Eric Satie. After a career spanning over 50 years, Reinbert De Leeuw passed away in 2020.
