Ricardo Iorio

Widely regarded as the godfather of Argentine heavy metal, Ricardo Iorio was born to a family of Italian and Tehuelche heritage in Ciudadela, Buenos Aires, on June 25, 1962. His youth in Caseros sparked a passion for heavy metal when he encountered a biker who embodied the style he would come to embrace. Iorio's musical journey began earnestly after he met Ricardo "Chofa" Moreno while watching a screening of Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same. Together, they formed V8, a band that would become legendary in the Argentine heavy metal scene. V8's rise was marked by powerful songs like "Voy a Enloquecer" and an iconic line-up that featured Iorio, Osvaldo Civile, Alberto Zamarbide, and Gustavo Rowek. The band's legendary participation in the B.A. Rock festival in 1982, thanks to the support of rock guitarist Pappo, was historical, despite the clashes it incited. Albums like Luchando por el Metal (1983) solidified their status, but internal strife led to the band's end in 1987. Iorio then founded Hermética, a reference to the hermetic wisdom he respected. Their eponymous 1989 debut album marked Argentina's first thrash metal record, and subsequent works like Ácido Argentino (1991) achieved gold status. Hermética's success soared without radio play, culminating in sold-out shows and gold-certified albums, until their split in 1994. Stepping up as lead singer, Ricardio Iorio returned with a new project named Almafuerte, which made its debut in 1995 with the LP Mundo Guanaco. He continued releasing albums with Almafuerte over the following years, such as Del Entorno (1996), A Fondo Blanco (1999), Ultimando (2003), and Toro y Pampa (2006), while also exploring Argentine folklore on 1997's Peso Argento, recorded with Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' Flavio Cianciarulo, His move to Coronel Suárez in Buenos Aires Province reflected his evolving lifestyle, leading to Trillando la Fina (2012), Almafuerte's final album, and later, his solo career on the albums Tangos y Milongas, Vol. 1 (2014) and Atesorando en los Cielos (2015). He kept touring and recording well into the 2020s before suffering a fatal heart attack on October 24, 2023.
