Seamus Blake

Jazz tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake was born in London, England on December 8, 1970, but raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. As a child, he was introduced to jazz music by his mother. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and while still a student, he was asked to record with drummer Victor Lewis. Seamus Blake graduated from Berklee College and relocated to New York City, New York, where he integrated himself into the New York jazz scene. In 1996, he released The Bloomdaddies, his first album as a leader. He followed that album with Stranger Things Have Happened (1999), and Live au Cabaret with the Daniel Thouin Trio (2001). He took first place at the 2002 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in Washington, DC. With the competition win, Seamus Blake became an in-demand sideman, working on over 70 releases over the next 20 years. He resumed his solo career with albums like Way Out Willy (2007), Bellwether (2009), Superconductor (2015), and Guardians of the Heart Machine (2019). Seamus Blake also spent time in John Scofield’s Quiet Band and joined the Mingus Big Band in the mid-1990s, playing on numerous award-winning albums.
