Zimbo Trio

Formed in 1964 in São Paulo, Brazil, jazz and samba group the Zimbo Trio was founded by pianist Amilton Godoy, bassist Luís Chaves, and drummer Rubinho Barsotti. This instrumental group came from humble beginnings yet became one of the most influential Brazilian groups of their generation. Their first performance – featuring vocalist Norma Bengell - took place at the Boate Oásis in Minas Gerais, Brazil. They released their self-titled debut album later that year, followed by the album Zimbo Trio, Vol. 2 in 1965. The trio became the house band for the TV show O Fino da Bossa, which was hosted by Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues. The Zimbo Trio collaborated with Elis Regina on the TV show’s companion album, also titled O Fino da Bossa. The trio continued to release a series of well-received albums including Vol. 3 (1967), Decisão (1969), Opus-Pop (1972), F.M. Stereo (1974), Zimbo Convida (1982), Ciã Do Clam (1992), 35 Anos Ao Vivo (1999), and many others. The Zimbo Trio also collaborated with many artists over the years including Claudya, Elizeth Cardoso, Jacob do Bandolim, Sonny Stitt, and Época de Ouro. Original bassist Luiz Chavez died on February 22, 2007, and was replaced by Itamar Collaço, who was then replaced by Mario Andreotti in 2010. With a catalog consisting of over 51 albums, the Zimbo Trio continues to spread Brazilian instrumental music all around the world.
