Founded in Fukuoka, Japan in 1979, Chage and Aska is a Japanese pop music duo consisting of Chage (Shuji Shibata) and Ryo Aska (Shigeaki Miyazaki). Winning the Yamaha Popular Song Festival with their debut single “Hitori Saki (One Bloom)” the duo released their studio album Kazemai the following year, however it was their 1981 album Neppū that saw them secure their first number 1 position on the Oricon Charts. Chage and Aska continued to release several chart-topping albums over the next 8 years including Turning Point (1984), Mix Blood (1986) and Rhapsody (1988), however the duo hit their stride in the 90s, releasing four consecutive number 1 albums between 1991 and 1995 including triple and quadruple platinum certified albums Guys (1992), Red Hill (1993) and Code Name 1 Brother Sun (1995). In 1996, the duo announced that they were focusing on their respective solo careers, teaming up again over ten years later to release hit singles “Man and Woman” and “Here & There” from their 2007 album Double, which peaked at number 4 on the Oricon Charts. The band announced another break in 2009, only to re-form in 2013 for a short period of time before splitting indefinitely in 2019. Their work has since been covered by artists such as Maxi Priest, Boy George and Richard Marx, and featured on film soundtracks including Street Fighter (1994) and the box-office smash Judge Dredd (1995).
