Mavis Hee

Xu Meifeng (September 27, 1974), better known as Mavis Hee, is a Singaporean singer-songwriter. Well-versed in both Cantonese and Mandarin, she made her debut in 1994 with the full-length Knowingly. Mavis Hee followed up in 1996 with the album Regret, which proved to be a huge commercial success, selling over 2,500,000 copies and making her a star in the process. The LP Living By Night also saw the light in 1996 and enjoyed a similar degree of success. In 1997, she broke into the Cantonese market with Listen Quietly, topping the Hong Kong International Federation of Phonographic Industry sales chart for three weeks in a row. A compilation titled Beginning To Listen: Review 1996–1999 arrived in 1999 and featured the track “The Cigarette You Smoke,” which became a smash hit in Taiwan thanks to its appearance in a very popular Taiwanese TV series. Crippled by a long-lasting depression, Mavis Hee disappeared from the public eye shortly after the release of her electronic-tinged album Static Electricity in 2000. She has since become an advocate for mental wellness and several charity causes.
