Song Dongye

Song Dongye – born in Beijing, China on November 10, 1987 – is a controversial folk singer songwriter. He achieved success for several years in China, but had his career derailed in 2021 by a five-year-old drug bust and he was banned from radio play, having been classified as a "bad artist" by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television of China. He began his career as an indie artist in 2009, releasing several singles that year including “Catch That Fat Man,” “Every Year,” and “Hey Pants.” He released his debut album, Snowy Claws, independently in 2010 but didn’t come into prominence until his 2013 album Anhe Bridge North. The album featured some of his best-known songs including “Miss Dong” and “An He Qiao.” The album and the song “Miss Dong” won numerous awards Including several Chinese Folk Song Awards, a Lu Xun Cultural Award, and the Best Folk Newcomer Award at the 13th Music Billboard Awards. In October 2016, he was arrested for possessing 80 grams of marijuana and was detained for 10 days. He also issued a public apology. In 2017, he released the album Guo Yuanchao. He continued to record and earned a Golden Melody Award for Best Lyricist in 2018. In late 2021, many of his scheduled live performances and prior recordings were banned due to his 2016 drug bust. Song Dongye responded to the ban on his webpage, but the site was soon taken down. He remained diligent and released a statement saying that he will continue to fight the government ban.
